The Over-the-Hill Gang Rides Again

The Over-the-Hill Gang Rides Again featuring Walter Brennan and Fred Astaire is a 1970 ABC Movie of the Week spin-off of the Western satire The Over-the-Hill Gang. The supporting cast incorporates Edgar Buchanan, Andy Devine, Chill Wills, Lana Wood, and Burt Mustin (every one of whom, with the exception of Wood, were in The Over-the-Hill Gang). Like the 1969 unique, the continuation includes a gathering of maturing Texas Rangers and was composed by Richard Carr and coordinated by George McCowan.

Pat O’Brien had played the second lead in the principal film, however, his character was kept separate from the spin-off and he was viably supplanted by Astaire, who was not in the first film.

Richard Widmark played O’Brien’s character in a semi revamp two decades later entitled Once Upon a Texas Train, in which the Over-the-Hill Gang, with an altogether new cast including Stuart Whitman, assumed supporting jobs to Willie Nelson’s train looter.
